Osram Opto Semiconductors has created a new infrared LED that can be used to produce an ultra-thin touchscreen. Microsoft’s Surface and recent e-readers from Barnes & Noble and Kobo have been infrared but Osram’s new technology will work in multitouch tablets. It is only 0.45mm tall and its diodes and sensors can be packed into a bezel around a screen and use just 35mW. The only thing left is for them to find a tablet maker to put their small IREDs in their slate.
