Toshiba Thrive 7-inch Worth Buying?

No one can question, that Toshiba had some major problems with their first gen of their Toshiba Thrive. Reviewers around the web trashed it, as the Thrive came with bug that kept on awakening the tablet from sleep-mode without even touching the slate. Toshiba released a bug-fix for that, but still – it was just too fat and too much plastic compared to other slates on the market like the iPad, the Samsung Galaxy Tabs, or even the Asus Transformer.

At IFA 2011 we saw that Toshiba knows better, as they introduced the AT-200 only short after the original 10-inch Thrive was released. The AT-200 is ultra slim, looks and feels much better but unfortunately still hasn’t been released yet.

What Toshiba released is their second generation named Thrive-7 with  two storage options, 16 GB or 32 GB. You will save about $50 if you pick up the 16GB Version and work with a SD card instead for more storage.

The Thrive-7 has a 1 GHz Nvidia Tegra 2 dual-core processor and 1 GB of RAM. The display is pretty crisp with a resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels. The Thive-7 does not have enough power to display true 720p videos but will still look very good. The built in volume booster really does a good job and turns the volume up a bit.

It cannot be compared to the high-end tablet segment but still does a pretty good job despite its flaws here and there. For about about $379.99 for the 16 GB model and $429.99 for the 32 GB model, the Toshiba Thrive-7 costs about as much as other 7-inch Honeycomb tablets do.

If you ask yourself is this tablet going “the right one for you”, then think about it… If design is not important to you and instead you would rather the option for hardware customization, then the Thrive-7 is your choice. Probably the only one.
But if you rather have a tablet to stream videos, play games and apps you might want to look at the Kindle Fire, Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.0 plus, Nook Tablet or the Acer A-100.
