HTC buying mobile os! It’s great when rumors can start thanks to words from the top. “We have given it thought and we have discussed it internally, but we will not do it on impulse”, stated HTC’s Cher Wang. This in reference to whether or not HTC’s consideration of buying their own mobile OS was to be taken seriously. Wang continued yet in a slightly different direction suggesting HTC doesn’t need its own OS,”We can use any OS we want. We are able to make things different from our rivals on the second or third layer of a platform. Our strength lies in understanding an OS, but it does not mean that we have to produce an OS”.
The rumor starts because even though HTC has a relationship with Android and can somewhat customize the OS, there is still no option B for the ‘quietly brilliant’ brand. So why not? The sinking ship webOS has had possibly two previous owners in Palm and with HP stopping their mobile venture, they’d make the second. HTC is the buyer in the market, add that to the words from Cher Wang equals rumor. When if ever, maybe next week…stay tuned.
