A lot of you received a Amazon Kindle Fire from Santa this Christmas and a couple of you might already wonder if it’s possible to flash Android 4.0 onto the tablet. We found the following video showing off a custom ROM which is running Android 4.0.3! Although it is still a little buggy… For example: videos won’t quite work yet, also SD card slot was not supported at first. After flashing the ROM you need to manually install the market and other Google Apps. But after doing so, you can actually download/install apps from the Google Market.
Folks over at the XDA forum are constantly tweaking the custom ROM to get everything working… At the same time they warn everyone who wants to flash this ROM onto their Kindle Fire:
Keep in mind that this really is to be seen as pre-release software, don’t whine if anything doesn’t work.
If you don’t know how to flash this, don’t do it. There will be instructions how to do it when this is considered as an usable Rom for daily use.
With an update they managed to get the SD card slot to work. We do expect an official update to Android 4+ but it’s nice to see an unofficial Android 4.0.3 Ice Cream Sandwich update for Amazon’s Kindle Fire! Even though it’s not running smoothly (yet) it’s running! see full video after the break.
