HP Not Killing WebOS; Only the Hardware

Despite earlier reports that HP will be discontinuing its plethora of webOS devices, an insider source has leaked that during an all-hands meeting at HP, employees were informed that the webOS Global Business Unit may not be dead after all.

Steven DeWitt, webOS Global Business Unit VP, stated, “We are not walking away from webOS.” Though he did admitted the HP did not have all the answers but will be continuing to be introspective about the future of webOS’s.

Many pin the failure of the webOS ecosystem on hardware and the fact that HP is trying to force a square peg into a round hole. DeWitt also revealed that the changes will lead to reductions on the webOS unit.

It appears that HP will try to license webOS to manufacturers. Though Darren Murph from engadget thinks that is foolish stating, “Sure, HP’s paying lip service to the whole thing by confessing that it’s evaluating licensing options for the platform, but only a company with more money than sense would attempt to sell a webOS device now. Palm couldn’t do it. HP couldn’t do it. The odds aren’t exactly in the favor of whoever tries it next”. I have to agree with Darren. There is no reason to believe that another manufacturer will find success with webOS.

In other news HP confirmed today that it purchased Autonomy for $10 billion as it transitions to focus on software and cloud computing.
