If you have Tablet that is still running Android 2.1, 2.2 or 2.3 we found this pretty nice way to boost your tablet’s overall appearance and handling to a honeycomb like experience. The company SPB provides the Honeycomb alternative launcher called SPB Shell 3D which is available on Android Marketplace for around $15. But also Phones can use the 3D UI that’s just been updated and now features landscape support, bookmarks folder and much more. Sascha Pallenberg from Netbooknews put together this nice presentation of the app. He shows off the ability to switch between smartphone and tablet mode. These are also experimental modes. Which include new features that take advantage of the OpenGL ES 2.0 compatible graphic controller.

The ability to add an almost unlimited number of homscreens is nice but four are pre-made by Spb: Time, weather, calendar, and Flickr. The combination of Spb’s own widgets, in addition to the “regular” Android widgets, shortcuts, and more you can pretty much customize all you want.

SPB claims that the app is rendered consistently at 60fps on most modern Android devices. The one issue I hear when talking to people about picking this up is price, it is a very expensive application, but its a premium app and also much cheaper then to buy a new honeycomb tablet. And also you can run in on a new phone with a super fast processor and if you’d like to show of the graphics capabilities with this app you can. Also for easy navigation, its worth the money. But our advice is if you want to make your Android 2.1, 2.2 or 2.3 tablet usable with a great UI, its the cheapest way to have the latest experience! Users seem to like the application. SPB earned $750,000 within 3 weeks after its initial release. So there is already a great number of users who know it worth the investment.

Check out the video below, the SPB Shell 3D running on the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7 and the Dell Streak 5″.
