Intel has been given access to Google’s Android Honeycomb source code.It has taken Google a few weeks to make the code compatible for its x86 architecture. Originally the code was written for ARM chipsets. Security around Honeycomb is so tight that one representative from Intel’s Software and Services group reported that Intel was not allowed to take the code off of Intel’s campuses.
At IDF 2011 conference Intel had a prototype hardware running its Intel Atom 670 processor at the booth, using the Oak Trail platform.
According to Intel a 32nm Medfield processor will arrive in 2012. It will use less power and its chipset will be able to both record(encode) and decode 1080p HD videos on your tablet. Presently Oak Trail can only encode at 720p HD. To date Intel has been able to get Android to function with Atom software acceleration but not hardware acceleration. Google and Intel are working in conjunction to optimize hardware acceleration for the future. So far apps like Opera and Google Body are working magnificently on the Oak Trail tablet though there is a lot of room for improvement without hardware acceleration. Still no official word is out on when the Medfield chipset will ship but we should see phones and tablets with Android and Medfield starting in early 2012.
