We all know the pains of crossing borders. Considering the rising terrorist threats and the devastating consequences of compromises, security these days are tight and tougher. While this is not really a problem for us, we are still amazed at how a few people, like the punks who fooled the Virginia DMV (Department of Motor Vehicles) and managed to get multiple driver’s licenses using a few tricks up their sleeve. Now, just a few days ago, we learned that a certain Canadian man, named Martin Reisch, managed to cross the border using a scanned copy of his own passport stored in an iPad 2. According to Reisch, he realized that he left his passport at home when he was already close to the border. Good thing he has a scanned copy of his password in his Dropbox folder. Reisch added that he was allowed to cross after he handed down his digital passport together with his driver’s license to the officer in charged.

What’s more interesting is that he used the credentials again upon returning back to Canada one week later. If this is true, then Reisch’s story can be wildly considered as a technological breakthrough. The U.S. Customs and Border Protection however, said that the story is not true. According to a representative, the assertion that a traveler was admitted into the U.S. using solely a scanned image of his passport on an iPad is categorically false. In this case, the individual had both a driver’s license and birth certificate, which the CBP officer used to determine identity and citizenship in order to admit the traveller into the country.
